You must be a nurse in good standing with the State Board of Nursing and have a willing heart. We need commitment as we cover four (4) counties in Ohio: Trumbull, Mahoning, Portage, and Columbiana. We ask that you attend a minimum of eight (8) services per year.
Uniform: For ladies, a white uniform dress or pants are fine. White shoes that are professional looking. Athletic shoes must be all white and no Crocs with holes. White socks/hose. Men: white uniform, socks & white shoes. Cap: if you have your cap from nursing school and it needs some TLC, you can remove the ribbon and clean it with a toothbrush and oxyclean. Some have taken them to the dry cleaner and have come back looking brand new. If you need to purchase one you can use Kayscaps.com Please don’t feel you need to order a cap if you have one. We like the diversity of the nursing caps. Cape: Our capes make us stand out and must be similar. If you have a cape from school, we invite you to use it. If you need to order one, we have the information. Do not order a cape from somewhere else without the approval of an elected officer. Men: a navy blue sport coat TBD with red satin handkerchief in the pocket (obtain through us)
Dues: There are annual dues we use to pay for supplies to honor nurses. We also have an additional logo shirt.
How Do We Know About a Service?
We have done a mock service for the Tri-County (Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana Counties) Funeral Directors so most know about the NHG. The majority of funeral homes also have folders we created. We utilize all ways of accessing obituaries on our counties. A texting system is used for call to service. If you need a ride, let us know. There are some nurses who prefer carpooling - if that’s a preference you’re in luck! No one is expected to attend every service, just 2 per quarter.
You will be informed of a date & time for orientation and practice. Practices occur throughout the year at quarterly meetings and as needed. Everyone is expected to attend at least one meeting per year There are caps and capes that we have for loan if necessary. (*If you have everything in order except for practice, this may be waived.) If anything is a financial burden, we have options.
Let us know what questions &/or concerns you may have. Once again, we welcome all nurses to the Nurse Honor Guard of Eastern Ohio.
